Ready? Set. Write! 2014 Week 4

Ready? Set. Write! is a way for writers to keep in touch with each other and keep themselves accountable to the goals they set. This year it's hosted by Katy Upperman, Alison Miller, Jamie Morrow and Erin Funk. Check out their blogs for more details and be sure to link up each week.

1). How I did on last weeks goals?

So so. I finished the book map for When The Wind Blows and finished going over notes from a CP. I only met my writing goal for Camp NANO two days so far. But all I have to do is up my word count from 500 to 600 a day and I should be okay. Didn't make it to the beach but did spend a lot of time out doors. And ready well over 2 books this week.

2). My goals for this week

If I get notes back from another CP, go over those and work on revisions. Until then, working on What If I Was Nothing for Camp NANO.

3). A favorite line from my story OR one word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised

From the (first, very rough draft) opening scene of What If I Was Nothing. My MC, Dani, is a bit of a trouble maker. But for good reason, of course.

But before I could try to explain any of this to Mr. Wells, not that I’d actually give away every detail—the what I did, not why—the fire alarm goes off. I may or may not have dropped a piece of burning paper inside a trash can on my way in. I figured if the thermostat didn’t drive him out of the office I needed a backup plan.

4). The biggest challenge I faced this week

My Camp NANO novel. It takes me forever to get into a new project and this one is no different. Usually takes rewriting the intro two or three times before I'm happy with where it's going.

5). Something I love about my WIP

The names of my main character and her brother, Dani and Drew Flowers. They're twists on mine and my brothers' names/middle names. Also, that it's sibling centric.

I love sibling centric stories and yours already sounds so full of awesome. Plus, I love the title. Good luck this week with camp NaNo and all the things!

Sibling centric sounds fantastic, Mandie! I think YA could use more stories like that. I like the snippet you shared. It definitely makes me ask questions, like what this plan is she has and why she needs a plan in the first place. Very hook-y! Good luck with your goals this week! :-)

I love sibling stories too! I can't wait to hear more about this project. C's at Zoo Camp this week, so if you have any free lunchtimes, let me know. It'd be fun to meet up!

I hate trying to write opening chapters. I kind of go into it knowing that I will later rewrite them all and just try to get through them. I hope you get over that hump and get in a writing groove with this project.

Story intros are such a pain! I struggled with mine this week too, even though I outlined and everything. Good luck with your revisions and your NaNo project! Working on two WIPs at once is a tall order!

I like your excerpt. Dani sounds like my kind of character ;)

I do too! Not sure what'd I'd do without my brothers around, even if they're sometimes a pain.
Thanks!!

Oh yay!! Thanks Jaime. I have a hard time with openings so I'm hoping this works out!

I'm trying to think that way! Thanks.

Thanks. I need to hash out an outline. Even a basic, brief one. Might help.
