Starting Over

What does one do when they reach 18, 631 words on their WIP and get stuck?  Most people would find a way to work around it.  Me?  I would scratch the idea and start over.  Crazy, right?  Well, that's just what I did last week.

I found myself at a part of my story that just didn't fit.  The thoughts sounded all wrong coming from my current character.  So, instead of moving forward with a storyline that was lifeless, I created a new one.  A more exciting one.

A better one.  Or so I'm told by Anna (talented author and amazing sister-in-law).

I kept the plot and setting, change the names of my MC and her love interest, took them from their twenties and made them teenagers.

Right now I'm just over 2000 words in and more excited than ever before, even though I have a LONG road ahead of me.  It's a lot, but do-able, especially with the help of my new writing partner.  With the help of Jamie (check out her blog, it's great inspiration) I hope to complete a first draft by summers end.  Our goal is 750 words a day.  More is a bonus.

  1. Oh, you most definitely need to write new story. I'm about to scrap one that I'm half-way done revising and is 50k words. Don't feel bad. If you don't love it, you don't love it.

  2. Wow...that is a big chunk of words! But I agree...I wasn't even into the story, so how could I expect others to be? THANKS! :)

  4. Awesome! I've done this before both on accident and on purpose. The first time I lost 20k words to a flash drive overheating and once I got over my devastation, I realized the rewrite was way better. I think every writer should do this at least once... it gives you a sense of freedom and reminds you that you are in control of your story.

  5. Thanks Aubrie!
Oh no Cheyanne! Did you initially freak? Not sure what I would have done. But yes, being in control can be good.
